Ponys: Das Islandpferd gehört dazu
Ponys, zu denen beispielsweise das Islandpferd gehört, sind kleiner als die so genannten Großpferde.
Auf Turnieren gilt jedes Pferd, das kleiner als 148cm ist, als Pony. Ansonsten gibt es noch die Unterscheidung zwischen Pony und Kleinpferd. Ein Kleinpferd ist demnach jedes Pony ab einer Größe von 130cm. Da Ponys eher gutmütige, recht widerstandsfähige und aufgrund ihrer geringen Größe für Kinder nicht so Furcht einflößende Geschöpfe sind, sind dies meist auch die Anfängerpferde.
Das Islandpferd ist eben solch ein Tier. Es hat einen kräftigen Körperbau mit so ziemlich allen Farbvarianten, die ein Pferd haben kann. Neben den Grundgangarten Schritt, Trab und Galopp hat es die vierte Gangart des Töltes. Deshalb ist der Isländer, neben Islandpony eine weitere Bezeichnung für das Islandpferd, ein Gangpferd. Was das Aussehen der Gangpferde betrifft, so ist dieses völlig unterschiedlich von schlank und elegant über muskulös bis sehr muskulös. Allgemein gesehen sind Isländer robuste Zeitgenossen, die auch im Winter draußen gehalten werden können, sofern sie einen Unterschlupf haben.
Krankheiten, die besonders bei Islandpferden auftreten, sind zum Beispiel das Sommerekzem und Spat. Sommerekzem ist eine Allergie, die sehr starken Juckreiz verursacht und vererbt wird. Spat ist eine Knochenentzündung des Sprunggelenkes, die die Ponys zum Lahmen bringt. Da auch diese Krankheit erblich ist, sollten Hengste, die zur Zucht eingesetzt werden, eine Spatuntersuchung vorweisen können. Nach Island dürfen, um die Rasse der Islandpferde nicht zu gefährden, keine Ponys importiert werden.
Das Islandpferd ist also eine genügsame und weitestgehend robuste Pferderasse, die zu den Ponys gehört, welche wiederum von Pferden in Bezug auf ihre Größe unterschieden werden.
